General Questions

Our software works with all cars that have OBD-II. In other words, they are OBD-II compliant.

Unfortunately, not all cars use standard OBD protocols for engine diagnostics. If you have a car that is rather old, or from a country that doesn't required OBD-II, then your car will likely not work with our software. Having similar looking connector doesn't guarantee that the car is OBD2 compliant.

As a general guideline, your passenger car is most likely to be OBDII compliant if it was manufactured or registered after:

  • USA: 1996
  • EU: 2001 (gasoline) or 2004 (diesel)
  • Algeria: 2014
  • Argentina: 2008-2009 onwards
  • Australia: 2006 (gas), 2007 (diesel)
  • Brazil: 2007-2010 onwards (gas)
  • Canada: 1998
  • China: 2010 (gas), 2011 (diesel)
  • Chile: 2014 (gas), 2013 (diesel)
  • Hong Kong: 2006 (gas), 2009 (diesel)
  • Iran: 2012
  • Israel: 2003
  • India: 2010-2013 onwards
  • Mexico: 2006-2013 onwards
  • Morocco: 2011
  • New Zealand: 2006 (gas), 2007 (diesel)
  • Peru: 2004
  • Philippines: 2016
  • Russia: 2010
  • Singapore: 2014
  • South Korea: 2005-2010 onwards
  • Taiwan: 2008
  • Thailand: 2013
  • Turkey: 2013
  • Japan: 2002-2010 onwards

For vehicles that don't belong to any of those groups, refer to the vehicle's owner's manual or the Internet for the compatibility info.

You need separate OBD adapter to be able to talk to your vehicle. OBD Auto Doctor supports all ELM327 based adapters.

Please note that the Android and iPhone apps work only with adapters having wireless connection.

See also the next question.

OBD Auto Doctor supports all ELM327 based hardware interfaces e.g. OBD adapters. In addition, the software works with Diamex DX70 Bluetooth adapter.

See OBD Adapters for information about the adapters. In addition to the listed adapters, the software works with any other ELM327 version 1.2 or higher scantool.

Windows, Mac and Linux versions support scantools with the following connection methods:

  • Serial port
  • Bluetooth via virtual serial port and natively using Microsoft, Apple or Bluez bluetooth stacks
  • Bluetooth Low Energy natively using Microsoft, Apple or Bluez bluetooth stacks
  • USB via virtual serial port
  • WiFi (WLAN)

Android app supports all types of wireless adapters:

  • Bluetooth
  • Bluetooth Low Energy (Kiwi 3 and LELink)
  • WiFi

iPhone and iPad versions support the following adapters:

  • Bluetooth Low Energy (Kiwi 3, Carista, LELink, Vgate, Viecar and Tonwon)
  • WiFi

Due to technical restrictions iPhone and iPad versions are not able to work with normal Bluetooth adapters.

Some adapters have dual capability to work as normal Bluetooth or Bluetooth Low Energy adapter. These need specific support only from iOS because other platforms can use the normal Bluetooth for communication.

Remember to check that your computer or device has support for the connection method too!

In order to view specific sensor values and use all the features of the software, your car must support the functionality!

Please see this separate page for the supported parameters and sensors.

  • SAE J1850 VPW
  • ISO 9141-2
  • ISO 14230-4 KWP

PC & Mac Specific Questions

No, you don't. The free version works without a serial number but it can be unlocked to a full version with a valid licence key.

Yes, you can use single license key on every computer you personally own. The same license key will work on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems. Please note that this is only for the personal license. Commercial usage requires license per workstation.

Yes, you can transfer the license to other computer you own. The license allows you to use the application in all computers that you personally own. If you reinstall or upgrade the operation system, you can also reinstall OBD Auto Doctor. Also if you upgrade the hardware or buy a new computer, you can always reinstall the software and your license will work.

It's your responsibility to keep the license details safe.

You can always contact us to request the key but we can't guarantee we are able to retrieve it. Upon contact, please provide the order number or at least some purchase details such as your full name.

Yes, if you are willing to provide us some high quality translations for your natively spoken language, we'll be happy to give you a free license in return.

Are you getting the following message?

-The license key you entered does not entitle you to use this version of the software.

In this case, you have downloaded newer version of the software that your license doesn't cover anymore. You will get the error message if you are trying to use software version that was released over a year after the license purchase. You need to get an upgrade for the license in order to use the new software version. Or you can always download an older version and keep using it with your current license.

Each purchased license will be valid for an unlimited time. So it works forever. You can use all new versions of the software that are released within 1 year after the purchase. After the first year, you may purchase updates for a reduced price. However, you don't have to buy the upgrade because you can keep using an older version with your current key forever.

Android Specific Questions
