Earlier this year, we were happy to make the announcement of the updated mobile apps in our Twitter account. Dark mode can extend your phone’s battery life significantly. It might be also easier for your eyes in low light conditions. OBD Auto Doctor honors your phone’s system settings to use or not to use the dark theme. You have full control of the used theme.
Both Android and iOS apps got support for the dark mode / theme. On Android, the dark theme can be used in all supported app versions back to Android 5. With iOS, the dark mode is supported only in iOS 13 and newer. This is because the platform restrictions and Apple not backporting new features to old iOS versions.

A few days ago we launched the updated OBD Auto Doctor software. This time our main focus was in calculated performance parameters such as Engine Torque, Engine Horsepower and Turbo Boost Pressure.
You can now measure the performance of your car by monitoring these new sensors in real time. Read further to get insight into the details.
Engine Power or Horsepower
Engine power (or horsepower) can be estimated quite well using vehicle speed and its change over very short period of time. The total weight of the vehicle is also needed for valid results.
OBD Auto Doctor measures the engine power at the wheels. This is not the same as at the flywheel. Therefore, if the vehicle speed doesn’t change, the power will show zero. The horsepower will be greater than zero only when the vehicle is accelerating.
The software will also take power loss due to drag into consideration when calculating the power. An average drag coefficient and vehicle frontal area are used.
You can set the vehicle weight in the app settings. To get the most accurate weight, drive your car to a weightbridge. You could also estimate the total weight by using manufacturer defined weight added with the passenger weight, fuel weight plus any extra weight included in the vehile.
Torque is calculated from the engine power and RPM. With these two pieces of information, the torque can be estimated quite accurately. Torque is measured at the wheels just like the engine power.
Since torque is using engine power for the calculation, the vehicle weight is a factor in the calculation. Remember to set the correct weight!
Boost pressure value yields from the intake manifold absolute pressure. Barometric pressure is also taken into consideration. Now, the vehicle is required to support MAP (manifold absolute pressure) in order for the boost pressure to appear as supported. Barometric pressure is optional. The default pressure value at sea level is used unless the car provides support for the actual barometric pressure.
Negative pressure values represent vacuum. Positive values are boosted by a turbocharger or supercharger.
Among the new calculated performance parameters, we also added more.
The software has now support for all Mode $06 scaling IDs. The latest OBD2 standard version added 12 new identifiers. OBD Auto Doctor implements now all the new IDs in addition to the old ones.

OBD2 Trouble Codes or Diagnostic Trouble Codes are defined by SAE (Society of Automobile Engineers). SAE is the organization that specifies the OBD2 standards. These include the one that defines all the generic Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Car manufacturers follow these definitions when they assign DTCs for detected errors.
J2012 is the document that defines the OBD2 Trouble Codes. The standard hasn’t been updated for a while but few months ago it got a new revision. The newest revision contained a bunch of new DTCs. These DTCs take new technology such as hybrid vehicles into better consideration, for example.
OBD Auto Doctor contains now all the possible generic OBD2 Trouble Codes that exists. We added total of 3899 new DTCs to the software.
The software contains total of 18193 Trouble Codes. The latest PC & Mac software as well as the Android and iOS apps have all these codes included.
The codes include:
Powertrain: 6631 codes
Network & Vehicle Integration: 1017 codes
Chassis: 363 codes
Body: 165 codes
Rest of the codes are manufacturer specific trouble codes
Multiple Freeze Frames
The latest desktop software version added support for multiple Freeze Frames too. Typically, only one freeze frame is saved. But with newer cars, it’s possible to store multiple freeze frames; one for each trouble code. The software will now read all available frames.
This is a great addition if the vehicle has more than one issue present. You get details from each issue, not only the first one.
Our OBD car app for Android has been a great success this far. Over 600,000 installations and over 1,100 five star reviews prove this success. As the Android platform continues to improve itself, we keep improving the app as well. Just before Christmas we released new and improved OBD Auto Doctor car app.
The previous app version used side navigation as the navigation pattern. This was the recommended way to provide navigation in Android for a long time. It had some problems, though. Some users didn’t learn how to use the navigation and didn’t understand it’s usage. For the new version we redesigned the app navigation. We replaced the old navigation with much simpler and intuitive tab bar navigation. It’s now also one of the official navigation paradigms for Android. It makes the navigation faster because all the main sections are visible at the bottom of the screen.
It wasn’t always easy to find the menu option for resetting the check engine light. Different devices had different ways of opening the menus. Some devices had a physical button and some had an user interface element for opening the menu. Now, the reset button is always visible in the Trouble Codes view. You can’t miss it anymore.
As one of the new features, we replaced the old analog dashboard with with a digital one. The digital dashboard or so called status view of the app is now the starting view. With this view you can track the sensors you want in real-time and with large and easy to read fonts. The speed and RPM are the only fixed sensors in the screen. You can customise all other sensors. Long press any “sensor box” to replace a sensor with any sensor that your car supports.
On-Board Diagnostic Monitors (OBD Mode $06)
Another new feature that we added was the support for On-Board Diagnostic Monitors. These monitors are also know as the OBD mode 06. On-Board Diagnostic Monitors offer professional level diagnostic capabilities. These monitors can give detailed information about misfire counts, for example. They can also give reasons for readiness monitor failures or hints for emerging problems. Not all cars support this mode but luckily most cars do.
OBD Auto Doctor has users all over the world. We’ve analysed the most popular countries and the need for app localisation. As a result, we translated the app user interface to French, German, Russian and Finnish.

The latest update of OBD Auto Doctor for Android added support for OBD WiFi adapters. So now the Android app supports both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi adapters. Although not as easy to setup as Bluetooth adapters, Wi-Fi adapters are good choice for those who consider switching from/to iPhone. The price of the OBD Wi-Fi adapters has considerable lowered in the last couple of years, which has brought the adapters to the awareness of new consumers.
Wi-Fi vs Bluetooth OBD adapters
One of the benefits of Wi-Fi adapter is that it allows very fast data rates. It means that your sensors will update faster in the app screen, for example. Another advantage is broad support on different platforms. The wifi adapters are supported in every platform so you can use them with OBD Auto Doctor iPhone and Windows Phone versions and with the desktop/laptop version as well.
One of the drawbacks compared to Bluetooth adapters is that Wi-Fi adapters are not as easy to setup. First, you need to connect to the network created by the adapter. Only after that you can use the app to connect to the adapter and car. The procedure might seem a bit tricky at first but it will get easier after you have done it a couple of times. To help and guide you through the first time, we made a short Quick start guide for WiFi adapters to get you started with the app and adapter.
In the previous app update for Android (version 2.2) and Windows Phone (version 2.0) we added support for multiple control units. The most common and usually the only control unit is the Engine Control Module. However, newer cars are starting to have more than the ECU responding to OBD2 requests. Most cars with automatic transmission have Transmission Control Module (TCM) available for example. There can be also other controllers depending on the manufacturer and model.
Our desktop software has had the support for multiple control units for ages but with the last update we brought the support to the mobile versions too. As with all mobile version updates, this update is completely free for all of our existing customers using the app in these platforms.
In Android, the selection of control unit was added as dropdown spinner in the action bar. The screenshot illustrates a vehicle with three control units available. The selection can be made by opening the spinner by tapping the title and then selecting the appropriate control unit. The selected control unit is visible in every view where it matters and where it can be changed. After changing the control unit, the view data is refreshed from the car and information is shown for the selected controller.
In Windows Phone, the control unit selection was added to the navigation page. The controller can be changed using the list picker on top of the navigation page titled “browse”. To change the control unit, you need to come back to the browse page and do the change you wanted. The screenshot is from the same car as the Android screenshot. The car has three control units and the first one is selected. The acronym of the selected control unit is indicated on top of the view in the title.
Now it’s good time to update your app to the newest version. Remember that as with all the other features, your car needs to support multiple control units for them to show up in the app. If you have only one ECU listed, then your car has only one ECU responding to the OBD2 messages. The completely redesigned and improved Android version of OBD Auto Doctor OBD-II app is now available for everyone! The user interface of the app is updated to support modern Android look. The design follows native Android navigation patterns and should be easy to use for every Android user.
We also improved the app under the hood. Performance was tuned and memory consumption decreased. In addition, few connection issues were resolved. Some of the fixed issues were related to specific phone models, and others to some clone adapters. All in all, we are very satisfied with the app now.

We designed the user interface from scratch to reflect the requirements of a modern Android app. The user interface now follows the Android guidelines and uses modern navigation components. We achieved to flatten the navigation hierarchy and improved the functionality with new Android 4.x phones.
At the same time we are trying to address all the possible connection issues. The Android version of our popular OBD2 software got a new version released few days ago. In this blog post I want to demonstrate one of the most important new feature of the released 1.1 version: Sensor Graph.
With the Sensor Graph you can see the OBD2 sensor values presented visually as a graph. The benefit of a graph is that it helps you to see trends in sensor value changes. It is also easier (for the co-driver) to monitor the values while driving. Moreover, the fullscreen sensor view uses black background color to save the battery life as much as possible. It’s good to use it if you wan’t to monitor some gauge for a long period of time.
The screenshots below illustrate the graphs. They demonstrate the different views in OBD Auto Doctor that let you monitor OBD2 sensor values. The screenshots are taken with the Nexus 7 tablet. The graphs really look good on large screen but they are usable smaller screens too.

The red circles in the images demonstrate the places to be touched. Touching the Fuel consumption item in the list view opens up the Sensor Graph view. The Fullscreen Sensor Graph view is opened by touching anywhere in the graph within the Sensor Graph view.
Well, that’s a question we hear once in a while. As you may have noticed, there is no separate Pro version of the app in Google Play. Your observation is correct. The reason for that is because the upgrade is done using Google Play In-App Billing mechanism.
Okey, so how does the process go in practice? Let me show you how to upgrade the app with some illustration. You can click the images to view them larger.

Launch the app. Once started, tap Extras from the bottom menu. Then scroll down and select Upgrade.
Tap the ‘Upgrade now‘ button.
Check all the details and then tap ‘BUY‘ to make the purchase.
As with all Google Play purchases, this purchase is also bind to your Google Account. You can install the app to all your Android devices with a single purchase. Just download the free app from Google Play, launch it and the app should automatically upgrade to the Pro version. It is that simple.
OBD Auto Doctor has reached the 10,000 downloads milestone for the Android version in six weeks after launching the app on the Google Play. It’s great to see that there are some many enthusiasts that are interested in getting to know their cars better. It seems that most of our fans are early adopters since over 40% of the downloads are done with new phones and tablets running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or newer. You guys are the trendsetters of this industry!
You can expect to get several updates for the app as we are constantly working on some neat features. Currently, we are working on the Sensor Graph and you can expect to get the upgrade at the end of next week.

Today is a great day because I have the pleasure to introduce you the OBD Auto Doctor Android application. We have been very busy the last couple of months working on this OBD app for the Android platform. Now we have achieved the milestone and there is only some fine tuning to do.
I’m sure most of you are waiting for this app for Android since more than half of you voted for Android in our previous post asking which mobile operating system you preferred. I guess we picked up a good choice then.
The app is not ready for release yet but the day is coming closer and closer. We are planning to release the first version of the app to Google Play during August. The first version has already a lot of good features implemented but we will add even more of them to the app after the initial launch.
